What is GEO?
GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. Classic SEO is about ranking on a Google results page so users click your link. GEO is about a different game entirely: getting cited inside the answer when someone asks ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity or Gemini a question.
AI assistants don't show ten blue links. They synthesise an answer from a handful of sources and quote them by name. If your content isn't picked up, you don't get a worse ranking — you simply disappear from the conversation.
Different game, different signals. Crawlability for AI bots, schema coverage, answer-friendly structure, recognised authority and clean content hierarchy all matter more than the keyword density and backlink profiles classical SEO obsesses over. CrawlSense scores your site on each and tells you what to fix first.
What makes a site AI-citation ready
Each dimension is scored 0–100 with concrete checks. Your overall GEO score is the weighted blend.
AI Crawlability
Can AI bots actually reach your pages? We check robots.txt rules for GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and friends, look for render-blocking JavaScript, and verify your sitemap is discoverable.
Structured Data
Schema.org coverage and JSON-LD validity across your pages. We focus on the entity types AI engines actually consume — Article, Organization, Person, FAQPage, HowTo and Product.
Answer-friendly content
AI assistants quote concise, self-contained passages. We measure paragraph length near the top of each page, presence of FAQ sections and definition-style intros that answer the question directly.
Authority
External links to recognised sources, named author bylines and a clean Organization entity all signal trust to LLMs. We surface missing bylines, broken citations and orphan author profiles.
Content Structure
Clean heading hierarchy (one H1, logical H2/H3 nesting), topical depth and E-E-A-T signals. Well-structured pages are easier for an LLM to summarise and cite accurately.
Each dimension produces a score, a breakdown by check and a list of fixable issues sorted by impact — feeding directly into the action plan below.
An action plan you can actually act on
No vague advice. Each item is a concrete fix tagged with expected impact and the effort it takes to ship.
Add Author byline to /pricing
Authority signal — LLMs prefer attributed content.
Add FAQPage JSON-LD to /faq and 4 product pages
Structured Data — FAQ schema is one of the most cited entity types by AI assistants.
Allow GPTBot and ClaudeBot in robots.txt
AI Crawlability — your site is currently blocking the two largest AI crawlers.
Sample action items shown above. Your real plan is generated from your site's audit and prioritised end-to-end.
We don't just score readiness — we ask the AI assistants and record what they say about your brand.
CrawlSense also tracks how Claude (and more engines coming) actually answer queries about your brand and category. Define the questions that matter to you, run them on a schedule, and see whether you're cited, who else is cited, and how the answer evolves over time.
The GEO score and action plan are the primary product. Engine tracking is a complementary feedback loop — fix the score, watch the citations follow.

What's the difference between SEO and GEO?
SEO optimises for ranking on a Google results page so users click your link. GEO optimises for being cited inside the answer when someone asks an AI assistant. The signals overlap (clean technical foundation, structured data) but the differentiators are different — answer-friendly content, recognised authority and explicit AI-bot crawlability matter much more for GEO.
Which AI engines do you cover?
The GEO score is engine-agnostic — it measures the signals shared by ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini. Our AI Engine Tracking feature currently runs live queries on Claude, with additional engines on the roadmap.
Do I need to do GEO if I'm already ranking on Google?
Ranking on Google does not guarantee AI citation. AI assistants pick a small set of sources to synthesise an answer, and the heuristics differ — they reward concise, well-structured, authoritative passages over keyword-optimised pages. If a growing share of your audience asks questions of an AI assistant first, being absent from those answers is a real gap regardless of your Google position.
How does CrawlSense score my site?
We crawl your site, run dozens of checks across the 5 GEO dimensions (AI Crawlability, Structured Data, Answer-friendly content, Authority, Content Structure), and produce a 0–100 score per dimension plus a weighted overall score. Each failing check turns into an action item with an estimated impact and effort, so you can prioritise the fixes that move the score the most.
