Google launched the Helpful Content Update (HCU) on August 25, 2022, as a sitewide signal — meaning content judged unhelpful affected rankings of all content on the same site, not just the unhelpful pages. The update specifically targeted content created primarily to rank in search rather than to genuinely help users: shallow how-to roundups, AI-generated thin content, "ranks for the keyword but answers nothing" pages, and recipe/blog sites bloated with personal stories before the actual recipe.

Google's creator guidance reframed the question for publishers: ask if your content satisfies a user's need, demonstrates first-hand experience, comes from clear expertise, and would be useful even if search didn't exist. If the honest answer is no, the system flags the site.

Three key milestones:

  • August 2022 — initial HCU launch, English-only, separate classifier.
  • December 2022 — added "Experience" to the broader E-E-A-T framework, aligning the HCU's first-hand-experience emphasis.
  • September 2023 — major HCU update ("September 2023 HCU") caused the largest sitewide drops the system had produced; many small affiliate and content sites lost 50-90% of organic traffic.
  • March 2024 — the system was folded into the core ranking algorithm. There is no longer a separate "HCU" rollout; helpfulness is one of many signals integrated into broad core updates.

The shift to core changed two practical things: recovery is no longer tied to a discrete "HCU refresh" event (you wait for any core update to re-evaluate), and the system likely uses more nuanced page-level and section-level signals rather than only sitewide classification.

People-first vs. search-engine-first is the central distinction. People-first content has a defined audience, demonstrates expertise, satisfies the visitor, leaves them feeling they learned something. Search-engine-first content targets a keyword volume number, mimics the format of top results, and chases topical breadth without depth. The line is fuzzy in practice — many useful sites do mild keyword targeting — but Google's classifier looks at the aggregate footprint.

Common misconceptions

  • "HCU only affects AI-generated content." It affects any unhelpful content regardless of authorship. Human-written content can be flagged if it's shallow, derivative, or written for search ranking rather than reader value. AI-generated content that genuinely helps users is fine — Google has stated this explicitly.
  • "Removing unhelpful pages instantly recovers rankings." Removal helps but recovery is gated by re-evaluation events (now core updates). Sites typically wait months. Some never fully recover, suggesting the system tracks more than just current page state.
  • "HCU is about word count or freshness." No. Word count alone is a poor signal. A 300-word page that genuinely answers a question outperforms a 3,000-word page that pads around the answer. Freshness matters by topic — evergreen content doesn't need updates to remain helpful.
  • "HCU and Panda are the same thing." Conceptually similar (both about content quality), but architecturally different. Panda was a periodic algorithm targeting thin/duplicate content; HCU was a sitewide classifier with broader people-first criteria. Both are now part of core signals.
