Perplexity
Perplexity AI is an answer engine that pairs every generated claim with numbered inline citations to web sources. Founded 2022 (Aravind Srinivas). Free tier with usage limits, Pro tier with model choice and unlimited Pro Search, Spaces for shared collections, and the Sonar API for developers.
Long definition
Perplexity is the company that made citation-first the default for AI search. Every paragraph the model generates is footnoted with numbered citations linking to the underlying sources. The user can hover, click, or expand the source list — making "where did this come from?" a one-click question instead of a leap of faith.
Product surfaces (as of early 2026):
- Perplexity (free) — daily quota of Pro Searches, basic model selection.
- Perplexity Pro — unlimited Pro Search, choice of GPT-4-class, Claude, and Sonar Large models, file uploads, image generation.
- Spaces — shared workspaces with custom instructions and a curated source set; the closest thing the answer-engine market has to a "topic-scoped agent."
- Sonar API — a developer API that returns answers with citations; widely used by other AI products to add web grounding.
- Comet — Perplexity's agentic browser, launched 2025, that browses and acts on user behalf.
Crawlers: PerplexityBot for indexing, Perplexity-User for live user-triggered fetches. Both should be allowlisted if you want citation eligibility.
What gets cited:
- High-authority domains dominate (Wikipedia, major news, established review sites).
- For long-tail queries, niche topical-authority sites win disproportionately because Perplexity rewards specificity.
- Sites with strong structured data and clean extractable text retrieve cleaner.
- Original data, named studies, and statistics get pulled into answers more often than soft summaries — same pattern as AI Overviews and ChatGPT.
Perplexity launched advertising experiments in late 2024 (sponsored related questions in finance and tech verticals) — meaningful for the long-term GEO economics, since it confirms answer engines will monetize the surface and source selection may eventually carry economic incentives.
For GEO measurement, Perplexity is the easiest engine to instrument: citations are explicit, and tools like Profound and Otterly can scrape per-query citation share at scale.
Common misconceptions
- "Perplexity is just ChatGPT with citations." Different stack. Perplexity ships its own retrieval pipeline (now Sonar) and was citation-first from launch. ChatGPT added web grounding later as a feature on top of a chat product.
- "Blocking PerplexityBot removes me from Perplexity entirely." PerplexityBot handles indexed retrieval; Perplexity-User handles real-time fetches when a user asks a question. Blocking only PerplexityBot still leaves you reachable via the live-fetch path. Block both if you want full removal.
- "Citation in Perplexity drives big traffic." Per-citation CTR is in the low single digits, similar to ChatGPT Search. Value is brand visibility and assisted conversions, not direct traffic.
